View Road Grades and Elevation Along Your Route

Wondering how steep your drive will get? Whether you’re towing a trailer, driving a big rig, or just want to know what to expect, Campendium can show you the elevation and road grades along your whole route before you hit the road.

The elevation profile is available to Campendium PRO members.

Elevation Profile

To see elevation and road grades for your trip, open your trip and click the Elevation profile button - the triangle icon - in the button row at the top of the itinerary panel.

An elevation chart will open below the map. It shows how high your route climbs (in feet or meters) over the distance of your trip (in miles or kilometers), from your first stop to your last. Numbered circles along the top of the chart match the numbered waypoints in your trip, so you can see which stretch of the drive each climb or descent falls on.

The chart is color-coded by road grade, so steep sections are easy to spot:

  • Green: less than 3%
  • Yellow: 3–5%
  • Orange: 5–7%
  • Red: 7% or more

To find where a section of road grade is on your route, hover over that part of the elevation line. A dot will appear on the map to show its exact location.

To close the elevation profile, click X Elevation at the bottom of the map.

Tips

  • Grade is the steepness of the road: A 6% grade means the road rises or falls 6 feet for every 100 feet traveled. Grades of 6% or more can be demanding for RVs and vehicles that are towing, especially on long climbs and descents.
  • Plan around steep sections: If you’d rather avoid steep grades, try adjusting your route or adding a waypoint to steer around a mountain pass.
  • Your profile updates with your trip: The elevation profile reflects your current route. If you add, remove, or reorder stops, reopen it to see the updated elevation profile.
  • Waypoints must be routed: The profile only includes the driving route. Waypoints that aren’t part of the route, which have no number, won’t appear on the chart.

This feature is currently only available on the Campendium website and is not yet supported in the mobile app.
