Campendium's map is customizable — you can switch between different base maps and layer additional information on top to help you plan smarter.
Opening Map Options
Click the Layers icon (stacked squares) in the top right corner of the map to open the Map Options panel.
Base Maps
Choose the map style that works best for what you're doing. Select one:
| Style | Best for |
|---|---|
| Campendium (default) | General campground browsing — clean and easy to read |
| Outdoors | Terrain and topography — great for understanding the landscape around a campground |
| Satellite | Aerial imagery — useful for checking road conditions, site layout, and surrounding land |
| Places | Shows pins for all of Campendium's 4 categories on the map |
Additional base maps (RV Pro only): Trails, Scenic, Light, Dark.
Map Overlays
Overlays are layers of additional information placed on top of your base map. Multiple overlays can be active at once. All overlays require an RV Pro membership.
Traffic Real-time traffic conditions on major roads.
Cell Coverage Overlay cell signal coverage by carrier. Choose from:
- AT&T
- T-Mobile
- Verizon
Public Lands Shade public land boundaries directly on the map:
- BLM (Bureau of Land Management)
- National Forests
- National Parks
Environmental
- Wildfire smoke — shows current smoke coverage, useful for planning around air quality
Tips for Using Overlays
- Use the Outdoors base map with the Public Lands overlay to see terrain and land boundaries together — this is especially useful for finding dispersed camping areas.
- Use Cell Coverage overlays before heading to a remote spot to get a sense of what service to expect, then cross-reference with community-reported coverage on campground pages for a more ground-level picture.
- Overlays can be toggled on and off independently — activate only what you need to keep the map readable.
On the Mobile App
The Layers button (stacked squares) is in the top right corner of the map on mobile — the same location as on web. Tap it to open the map options panel as a bottom sheet.
All base maps and overlays are available on mobile. They're presented as a visual grid of tiles rather than a list. Tap a tile to select a base map or toggle an overlay on or off.
